Five Things about Australian Open women's singles winner Angelique Kerber

Angelique Kerber stunned Serena Williams at the Australian Open to win her first grand slam title at the age of 28.

Kerber beat the American 6-4 3-6 6-4 after two hours and eight minutes on Rod Laver Arena to seal one of the biggest shocks in tennis history.

Here, Press Association Sport lists five things you might not have known about the German.

1. Her idol is Steffi Graf

After growing up in Bremen in the 1990s and being tennis-mad from an early age, there was only ever going to be one idol for Kerber. Graf, a 22-time grand slam singles champion, has been a huge influence on Kerber's career and even invited the 28-year-old to her Las Vegas home last year to work on her game after a first-round Indian Wells exit.

2. She is the first German to win a grand slam this century

Little did Graf know at the time, but her French Open triumph in 1999 would be the last time a German would lift a grand slam title - until now. Kerber always said her favourite tournament was the Australian Open and she has duly delivered Down Under to claim her country's first grand slam success in almost 17 years.

3. She is a big Taylor Swift fan

In June 2015, two days before Wimbledon began, Kerber and fellow German tennis star Anna-Lena Groenefeld took in a Taylor Swift concert in Hyde Park, London. It seemed to go down a treat on the night, but a third-round exit in SW19 to Garbine Muguruza meant she had to 'shake it off' and go again.

4. Her mother is also her manager

Kerber says her mother, Beata, is "the most important person my life" but her influence stretches way beyond that of most parents. Kerber has played tennis since the age of three, and Beata has been the driving force on the court since her professional career began at the age of 15.

5. She runs her own tennis academy

Kerber actually lives in Poland, which is where the Angelique Kerber Tennis Academy is based. Opened in 2006, "Angie" ranks among the biggest tennis clubs in the country and possesses four indoor carpet courts and four outdoor Laykold hard courts - the only ones in Poland.
