Johanna Konta progressed to the second round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham before rain caused play to be suspended for the remainder of Thursday evening.

The British number one began slowly before defeating Japan's Misaki Doi 7-6 6-1. She will next face Yanina Wickmayer of Switzerland, who earlier overcame former world number one Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-7 6-2.

The bad weather, which caused play to be abandoned for the third day of four, prevented Heather Watson's second-round match with the Czech Republic's Barbora Strycova taking place.

Also in the second round, fifth seed and former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was eliminated by Jelena Ostapenko, via a 6-4 4-6 6-3 scoreline.

At the Mallorca Open, former world number one Ana Ivanovic defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1 6-0 to reach the competition's quarter-finals

Ivanovic converted five of nine break points, and next faces number six seed Caroline Garcia, who earlier defeated Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-4 7-6 (7/4).

There were also wins for Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens, 6-3 6-4 over Puerto Rico's Monica Puig, and Paraguay's Veronica Cepede Royg, who beat Laura Siegemund of Germany 7-6 (7/5) 3-6 7-5. Flipkens next meets Cepede Royg.

The remaining quarter-finals are between Serbia's Jelena Jankovic and Romania's Sorana Cirstea, and Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova and Mariana Duque of Colombia.
