Second seed Camila Giorgi survived a second-set scare before beating Zarina Diyas in the first round of the Hobart International.

The Italian regrouped to clinch a 6-4 1-6 6-1 win over her Kazakhstani opponent in one hour 45 minutes.

Both players had their chances, with nine breaks of serve from 28 opportunities, but Giorgi got her serve together when it mattered as Diyas' went to pieces.

Seventh-seed Alize Cornet of France was too strong for Czech Denise Allerto, winning 6-4 7-5, while Russia's Margarita Gasparyan was also a straight-sets victor, 6-4 6-3 over Australian wild card Maddison Inglis.

Eighth-seeded Belgian Alison van Uytvanck booked her place in the second round with a routine 6-2 7-6 (7/2) win over Germany's Carina Witthoeft.
