Eugenie Bouchard made an unceremonious exit from the Western & Southern Open on a rain-affected day in Cincinnati.

The 22-year-old Canadian - a former world number five - was dismissed in the first round by Barbora Strycova, who won 6-4 6-0 in under an hour and a half to book a clash with Samantha Stosur.

Strycova told WTA.com: "I'm not sure how I stayed focused through all of it. I think the first set was the deciding point - I was holding serve all the time and then I broke her at 3-3. I believed in myself and I'm happy that I did it.

"I felt good and Eugenie is such a good player that you always have to stay focused."

Karolina Pliskova became the first player to reach the last 16 courtesy of her 6-4 6-1 triumph over Jelena Ostapenko and she will next face the winner of Misaki Doi's meeting with Christina McHale.

There were no three-setters required on Tuesday with Alison Riske, Timea Babos, Annika Beck, Tsvetana Pironkova and Alize Cornet all progressing to the second round before inclement conditions rendered the late matches unplayable.

Fourth seed Garbine Muguruza will meet Coco Vandeweghe on Wednesday while Andrea Petkovic and Lucie Safarova, Kateryna Bondarenko and Kristina Mladenovic, Johanna Larsson and Irina-Camelia Begu, and Viktorija Golubic and Kurumi Nara saw their scheduled encounters postponed due to the weather.
