Roger Federer strolled into the second round of the US Open with a straight-sets win over Argentina's Leonardo Mayer.

Federer had expressed dismay before the match that Mayer had not been seeded in the tournament but the Swiss had little problem against the world number 34, winning 6-1 6-2 6-2.

The victory took 77 minutes and saw Federer defend just one break point as the 17-time major champion booked a round two match-up with either Marcos Baghdatis or Steve Darcis.

Federer arrives in New York on the back of claiming his 87th career triumph at Cincinnati, where he beat both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic on route to the title.
