Nikoloz Basilashvili stuns Tomas Berdych to progress in Vienna

Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili pulled off a shock victory when he knocked second seed Tomas Berdych out in the first round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Basilashvili, who is ranked 107 in the world, produced a memorable performance to recover from losing the opening set and defeat world number 10 Berdych 6-4 6-7 (5/7) 7-5.

Ivo Karlovic, the eighth seed, did make it safely through as the Croatian beat Steve Johnson of the United States 7-6 (7/5) 6-3.

Qualifier Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, the world number 43, 6-3 5-7 6-0.

Russian wild card Karen Khachanov also progressed with a 6-4 6-4 win over Italian Andreas Seppi, while American John Isner saw off Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7 (1/7) 6-3 6-4.

There were no upsets in the opening matches at the Swiss Indoors Basle, where both third seed Kei Nishikori and fourth seed Marin Cilic progressed to the second round.

Nishikori, the world number five from Japan, came through 7-5 6-1 against Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, while Croatian Cilic defeated Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-4 6-2.

Elsewhere, American qualifier Donald Young beat Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine 6-4 6-2 to set up a second-round tie against either Swiss top seed Stan Wawrinka or wild card Marco Chiudinelli, who play on Tuesday.

Federico Delbonis beat Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-4 6-4, and the Argentinian could next meet second seed Milos Raonic, with the Canadian also in action against Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis on Tuesday.
