Fifth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez survived a fightback by Michael Berrer to secure a place in the second round of the Millennium Estoril Open in Portugal.
The 32-year-old Spaniard took the opening set 6-3 and them moved 5-1 ahead before Berrer, ranked 115 in the world, recovered to force the tie-break, but eventually lost 7-6 (7/3).
Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, meanwhile, booked a showdown against countryman and number one seed Gilles Simon after progressing against Portuguese player Gastao Elias 6-3 6-4 in just over 90 minutes.
Elsewhere, British number three Kyle Edmund went through with a s traight sets 6-3 7-5 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain, and is to next face world number 21 Benoit Paire of France, the tournament's third seed who had been given a first-round bye.
