Greg Rusedski leads praise for French Open finalist Andy Murray

Andy Murray played 'Herculean" tennis to reach his first French Open final, according to Greg Rusedski.

The 29-year-old Scot produced some of his best tennis to surge two sets ahead, but a blip at the end of the third set allowed semi-final rival Stan Wawrinka to eat into his lead.

The defending champion thrust pressure on Murray, however it was the cue for Murray to again step up his performance and set up a showdown with Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

Murray crossed the line a 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2 winner and former British number one Rusedski said on Eurosport: "After losing that third set the response was Herculean. I mean, incredible.

"He breaks him straight away and then keeps the momentum. (It was) probably the best clay-court match I've seen Andy Murray play."

Rusedski thinks Murray can repeat his recent Rome Masters final victory over Djokovic when the pair both set out on Sunday with the aim of winning the Roland Garros title for the first time.

Djokovic currently holds the Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles and is aiming to complete the rare feat of being champion of all four majors at the same time.

Murray saw off Djokovic in straight sets in the Italian capital last month, a rare win for him over the world number one.

"For me it's going to come down to the mentality because this is the only (grand slam) tournament Djokovic hasn't won - he's done everything in tennis apart from the (Olympic) gold medal and the French Open," Rusedski added.

"There's a little history and a little pressure. There's a certain Rod Laver sitting there for the finals and he's trying to emulate him by holding all four majors at the same time, so for me it doesn't come down to tennis balls, it comes down to who wants it a little bit more.

"We're looking forward to an epic match. Can Murray do it two times in a row? Yes he can. This is going to be a sensational final."

Great Britain's Davis Cup captain Leon Smith saluted Murray's display, saying: "He just played flawless tennis. He didn't allow Wawrinka to get any rhythm.

"It's really coming together well and it's coming together at the right time."

Mother Judy Murray hailed her son in a short Twitter message that read: "Twinkle twinkle #RolandGarros"

If her little star lifts the trophy on Sunday, he might have to find an even better performance.

Brother Jamie Murray acclaimed a classic display from the world number two, writing: "Amazing performance from Andy - one of the best I've ever seen from him. RG finals!!!"

And from politics there was appreciation from SNP leader and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who wrote: "We're all proud of you @andy_murray"
