Russia's Teymuraz Gabashvili set up a second round showdown with top seed Kei Nishikori after making a solid start to his Barcelona Open campaign on Monday.

Gabashvili broke Spanish opponent Pablo Carreno Busta three times on his way to 7-5 6-4 win over the world number 63.

All four qualifiers slumped out at the first stage with Japan's Yuichi Sugita picking up just one game in a 49-minute, 6-1 6-0 defeat to Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci.

Jaume Munar, Marton Fucsovics and Thiemo De Bakker were also beaten by Benoit Paire, Andrey Kuznetsov and Elias Ymer respectively.

Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin was in top form as he swept aside Brazil's Joao Souza 6-1 6-0, and there were also wins for Spanish trio Marcel Granollers, Pablo Andujar and Roberto Carballes Baena.
