Roger Federer needed just an hour to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Istanbul Open.

The top-seeded Swiss opened his account with a comfortable 6-2 7-5 victory over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, and did not face a break point on the way.

Federer told www.atpworldtour.com: "I'm happy that I won my first match ever in Turkey. In the second set, Jarkko started playing better and I'm happy that I managed to close the match."

Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver awaits Federer in the semi-finals, although the latter is planning to make the most of his rest day on Thursday.

He said: "I have a day off and I will enjoy and do a sightseeing trip by boat on the Bosphorus to see some more of this beautiful city."

Fourth seed Santiago Giraldo booked his place in the last eight with a slightly more complicated 6-4 1-6 6-3 win over Andrey Rublev, but Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin, who was seeded sixth, bowed out in straight sets, 6-3 6-3, to Gimeno-Traver.

There were no such problems for eighth seed Diego Schwartzman, who took only 52 minutes to see off Jurgen Melzer 6-0 6-2.

In the doubles, second seeds Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald were denied a place in the semi-finals by Radu Albot and Dusan Lajovic, who prevailed 10-8 in the third.
