Australian Nick Kyrgios has been fined £13,500 by the Association of Tennis Professionals for his behaviour during defeat to qualifier Mischa Zverev at the Shanghai Masters.

Kyrgios, who won the Japan Open title last week, was booed off the court during a petulant display on Wednesday, which included tame serves and walking out of points before they were finished.

The 21-year-old also became involved in a heated exchange with the chair umpire, who at one point told the Kyrgios to ''act professional and play with your best effort the whole time''.

A s the match slipped away, Kyrgios then had a verbal spat with someone in the crowd.

Footage of Kyrgios' behaviour went viral online and across social media, with one Australian bookmaker offering to refund losing bets.

The ATP confirmed on Thursday, following an investigation into the match, that Kyrgios would be hit with a series of financial penalties in accordance with the regulations of the governing body.

" The ATP has announced that Nick Kyrgios has been fined a total of 16,500 US Dollars for breaches of the ATP Code of Conduct during his second-round match against Mischa Zverev at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday," a statement read.

"After completion of the on-site investigation, Kyrgios received the on-site maximum fine of 10,000 US Dollars (£8,200) for Lack of Best Efforts, as well as a 5,000 US Dollar fine (£4,100) for Verbal Abuse of a Spectator, and a 1,500 US Dollar (£1,200) fine for Unsportsmanlike Conduct."

Kyrgios had addressed the issues directly in his post-match media conference.

The Australian said: ''It was just tough. Obviously I played a lot of matches in a row. Physically tired, mentally tired.

"That's why I'm trying to work on being able to be consistent every week. Just took the easy way out tonight and obviously didn't show up at all.

''I wasn't so much frustrated. I just tapped out a little bit, I guess.''

Kyrgios, the world number 14, also defended his exchange with the crowd, saying: ''They don't know what I'm going through, so no, I don't understand it.

''I feel like if they knew what they were talking about they'd be on the tennis court and being successful as well.

''I don't owe them anything. It's my choice. If you don't like it, I didn't ask you to come watch. Just leave.

''If you're so good at giving advice and so good at tennis, why aren't you as good as me? Why aren't you on the tour?

''You want to buy a ticket? Come watch me. You know I'm unpredictable. It's your choice. I don't owe you anything. Doesn't affect how I sleep at night.''

At Wimbledon 2015, Kyrgios suffered a similar on-court meltdown when losing to Richard Gasquet.

The Australian appeared more apologetic when later on Wednesday, he wrote on Twitter: ''Not good enough today on many levels, I'm better than that.

"I can go on about excuses but there are none. Sorry #StillAWorkInProgress''.
