British number two Aljaz Bedene was defeated 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7/2) by qualifier Karen Khachanov in the first round of the Barcelona Open.
The Slovenia-born 26-year-old won the first set 6-3 but was pegged back by the same score in the second.
His Russian opponent, ranked 79 places below him at 138th in the world, then claimed the deciding set after it went to a tie-break.
