Second seed Yanina Wickmayer crashed out of the Istanbul Cup first round on Wednesday as she was beaten by world number 113 Andreea Mitu.

Belgium's Wickmayer, a former US Open semi-finalist and ranked 42nd in the world, lost 6-2 7-5 to Romanian Mitu, who will now face Stefanie Voegele in round two.

"It was strange for me to play on such a big court," Mitu told wtatennis.com.

"I am not that used to it so it feels different, but I am confident on clay."

Fourth seed Kirsten Flipkens is through after she edged a tight contest against Croatia's Donna Vekic 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 to book a second-round meeting with Kateryna Kozlova.

Greek qualifier Maria Sakkari also progressed, backing up her shock victory over top seed Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova by beating Hsieh Su-Wei 6-3 6-4.
