Former world number one Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from Wimbledon with a knee injury, tournament organisers have announced.

The Belarusian, who was seeded sixth for the event which begins next week, has not played since being forced to retire in her French Open first-round match last month.

A statement from the Wimbledon referee's office read: "Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the ladies' singles championships 2016 due to a knee injury."

Azarenka suffered the injury playing against Karin Knapp at Roland Garros and was unable to continue, pulling out while trailing 4-0 in the final set.

The 26-year-old, a two-time former Australian Open champion, has twice reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
