Venus Williams made up for defeat in the doubles to win her first-round singles match at the Italian Open.

Daria Kasatkina went over Pliskova 6-4 6-4, with Puerto Rico's Monica Puig beating Svitolina 6-1 4-6 6-1.

Former world number one Ana Ivanovic beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-4 and Madison Keys, Andrea Petkovic, Barbora Strycova, Ekaterina Makarova, Misaki Doi, Teliana Pereira, Irina-Camelia Begu and Anna-Lena Friedsam all progressed from their first-round matches without dropping a set.
