Top seed Maria out in Florianopolis

Top seed Tatjana Maria crashed out of the Brasil Tennis Cup in straight sets on a day when three seeds fell at the second-round stage in Florianopolis.

The 27-year-old German suffered a 6-3 6-1 defeat to Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in 78 minutes in the opening match on Court Two.

Second-seeded Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic fared no better despite taking her match with Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic to a third set as she was finally beaten 6-1 4-6 6-1.

Poland's Paula Kania, seeded eighth here, was knocked out following a straight-forward 6-2 7-6 (9/7) loss against Brazil's Gabriela Ce, who set up a quarter-final against Annika Beck.

Third seed Beck of Germany eased past France's Alize Lim 6-1 6-2, while fifth seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States also advanced by seeing off Romania's Ana Bogdan 6-2 6-3.

There were also wins for fourth seed Teliana Pereira, seventh seed Laura Siegemund and Anastasija Sevastova as Risa Ozaki, Elitsa Kostova and Veronica Cepede Royg were eliminated.
