Stephens advances in Strasbourg

Sloane Stephens produced the upset of the day as she overcame sixth seed CoCo Vandeweghe in straight sets to reach the third round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg in France.

The American needed 76 minutes to beat her opponent 6-3 6-4 and advance to the third round, where she will face third seed Jelena Jankovic, who was victorious against China's Saisai Zheng 6-3 6-3.

Australia's Sam Stosur also progressed through to the next stage after claiming a walkover as her opponent Lesia Tsurenko pulled out before the match with a back injury.

Ajla Tomljanovic was made to work for her win at the start of the day, but still advanced after beating Shelby Rogers 7-6 3-6 6-2 to book a meeting with Stosur.
