Simona Halep booked her spot at the WTA Finals after advancing to the semi-final of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open.

The fourth seed saw off America's Madison Keys 6-2 6-2 to ensure her appearance at the end-of-season showpiece in Singapore later this month. She is the third player to seal her place behind Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams.

She said: "It's amazing to qualify again for Singapore three years in a row. It's a good thing. It gives me confidence. It's going to be a good experience again.

"I can't say that I'm surprised. After May in Madrid, I have played very well. I lost a few matches against Serena and Kerber in the last three, or four months, but that's it.

"I feel that I deserve to be there. Of course, I haven't won a grand slam yet, but still I played very well in the big tournaments."

Svetlana Kutnetsova made a big dent in the points she has to win to qualify with a superb come-from-behind win against Agnieszka Radwanska.

The Russian had to save a match point in a second set tie-break before coming back to win 1-6 7-6 (11/9) 6-4 in just under three hours.

2014 champion Petra Kvitova advanced to the semi-finals after beating Johanna Konta 6-3 6-4 while Dominka Cibulkova won twice to make it through to the last four.

The Slovakian beat Karolina Pliskova 6-2 6-2 in her rain delayed third round and then came back for the last game of the day and got the better of Barbora Strycova, who had earlier beaten Jelena Jankovic, 3-6 6-3 6-4 in a match that finished just before 1am local time.

Strycova returns to court in just 14 hours to take on Kuznetsova in the semi-final.

At the Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan, reigning champion Nao Hibino kept her defence of the title on track after Lesia Tsurenko was forced to retire.

The Japanese had won just the first set 7-6 (8/6) when her Russian opponent called time on the match.

Hibino will now meet Denisa Allertova in the semi-final after she disposed of second seed Kristen Flipkens 7-5 6-4, with Kristyna Pliskova meeting Kateryna Kozlova in the other semi, after they saw off Irina Khromacheva and Stefanie Voegele respectively.
