Sharapova reaches quarter-finals on walkover

Maria Sharapova earned her quarter-final place at the Madrid Masters on Thursday as the Russian advanced when opponent Lucie Safaroava withdrew with illness.

Second seed Sharapova will await an opponent from the former number one pair of Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams.
