Serena Williams has still never lost before the third round at the US Open after the American eased past Vania King in straight sets.

Williams is bidding to win an Open-era record 23rd grand slam singles title in New York and she took one step closer by beating King 6-3 6-3.

The world number one, who had Beyonce and Jay-Z watching on in Arthur Ashe Stadium, will now face Sweden's Johanna Larsson for a place in the last 16.

Williams had to field questions about her troublesome shoulder in the build-up to this tournament, but the 34-year-old has come through her opening two rounds with impressive efficiency.

She refused to give away a single break point against King and her first serve, the shot most under threat from her injury, delivered 68 per cent of the time.

Elsewhere, Serena's sister Venus also progressed on a rain-interrupted fourth day at Flushing Meadows, along with fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and fifth seed Simona Halep.
