Russian Anastasia Potapova joined an illustrious list of Wimbledon girls' singles champions on Saturday with victory in the final against Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.

The 15-year-old fourth seed enjoyed a 6-4 6-3 win on Court One against her 16-year-old opponent, seeded seventh, and follows in the footsteps of the likes of Tracy Austin, Martina Hingis, Amelie Mauresmo and Caroline Wozniacki in taking the title.

Potapova, who began playing tennis at the age of five, said afterwards that her favourite women's tennis player is Maria Sharapova, her compatriot who is currently suspended from the tour for a doping offence.

She said of her Wimbledon success: " I'm so happy that I won."

Her grandmother set Potapova on the way to Wimbledon success by encouraging her to practise at a young age.

Potapova said: "At first practice, I was, 'Oh, I like it'. But then I liked it more, more, more. Now I love it. I love my tennis life. I love everything here because I can't imagine my life without tennis really."
