Anna Karolina Schmiedlova's defence of her Bucharest Open title was brought to an abrupt end on Monday as she was beaten in round one by Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

The Slovakian third seed, in desperately poor form this year, suffered a 6-4 1-6 7-5 loss to a player ranked 104th in the world, 63 places below her.

There were no such problems for Turkish eighth seed Cagla Buyukakcay, who defeated Schmiedlova's compatriot Kristina Kucova 6-0 7-5 and who now faces a last-16 clash with American Vania King, a 7-6 (7/4) 6-0 victor against Paula Kania of Poland.

Meanwhile, at the Ladies Championship Gstaad in Switzerland, three qualifiers were among those progressing to the second round.

They included France's Claire Feuerstein, who is ranked 428th in the world and who came from behind in impressive fashion to record a 2-6 6-2 6-0 win over world number 127 Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain.

The others were home favourite Amra Sadikovic, a 6-2 3-6 6-3 victor against Swede Rebecca Peterson, and Luxembourg's Mandy Minella, who beat Tunisian and fellow qualifier Ons Jabeur 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
