Petra Kvitova through in Connecticut Open as she chases third straight title

Petra Kvitova began her pursuit of a third successive Connecticut Open with a three-set victory over American Louisa Chirico.

The number six seed, winner of the New Haven tournament in 2012, 2014 and 2015, overcame a tricky start to triumph 1-6 6-1 6-3.

Canadian Eugene Bouchard made swift progress against Annika Beck with a 6-2 6-1 victory, though former world number one Caroline Wozniacki lost 7-5 6-2 to Jelena Ostapenko.

Anastasija Sevastova beat Nicole Gibbs 7-5 6-0, Caroline Garcia had a 6-1 6-4 win over Irina-Camelia Begu and Elena Vesnina toppled Camilia Giorgi 6-1 6-4.

There were also wins for Anett Kontaveit, Evgeniya Rodina and Ana Konjuh while Elina Svitolina, Ekaterina Makarova and Shelby Rogers all progressed on Sunday.
