Petra Kvitova beats illness, Lucie Safarova, to defend Connecticut Open title

Petra Kvitova overcame illness to beat fellow Czech Lucie Safarova and win her second consecutive Connecticut Open title.

Kvitova is still recovering from her recent battle with mononucleosis but despite fatigue, the two-time Wimbledon champion came from a set down to overcome Safarova 6-7 (6/7) 6-2 6-2.

It is the third time Kvitova has won the tournament and her fourth consecutive final after defeat at the last hurdle to Simona Halep in 2013.

Despite the victory, there will be concern about Kvitova's physical condition just one day ahead of the start of the US Open.

Kvitova faces German Laura Siegemund in Flushing Meadows on Tuesday and the number five seed is considered one of the few players who could prevent Serena Williams from winning her fourth grand slam title of the year.

Safarova plays Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko in New York, hoping to continue an impressive year which included reaching the French Open final in June.

The world number six got off to a strong start against Kvitova, edging a close 66-minute opening frame in a tie-break by converting her third set point.

Kvitova, however, came storming back to win the next two sets in just 73 minutes and seal a 17th WTA title of her career.
