British number two Katie O'Brien made it through to the second round of qualifying for the US Open after a three-set win over Lesya Tsurenko.

The world number 129 produced a mixed performance, including nine double faults, but O'Brien's play on her opponent's serve was more effective.

The 24-year-old took the first set 6-4 before her Ukrainian opponent hit back to level at 6-3 and a difficult deciding set appeared to be on the cards.

However, the Beverley-born player dominated the set, cruising through in 37 minutes to take it 6-2 and clinch victory after a little less than two and a quarter hours.
