Top seed Tatjana Maria breezed into the second round of the Brazil Tennis Cup in Florianopolis with a straight-sets victory over Brazilian wildcard Maria Fernanda Alves.

The German world number 65 needed just 82 minutes to wrap up a 6-2 6-3 triumph against the local favourite on centre court and will now meet the winner of the match between Sweden's Rebecca Peterson and Spaniard Maria Teresa Torro Flor in the next round.

Second seed Ajla Tomljanovic is also safely through courtesy of a straight-sets win, although her clash with Laura Pous-Tio was slightly more challenging than Maria's encounter.

Croatian Tomljanovic needed an hour and 45 minutes to secure a 7-5 7-6 (8/6) win against the Spaniard.

Polish eighth seed Paula Kania made it a hat-trick of straight-sets victors on Monday as she advanced 6-4 6-1 past Swedish qualifier Susanne Celik.

France's Alize Lim joins the trio in the next round but needed more than three hours to edge past Argentina's Paula Ormaechea 6-4 6-7 (6/8) 7-6 (7/2).
