Second seed Zarina Diyas was a surprise casualty in the second round of the Japan Women's Open in Tokyo on Thursday.

The Kazakh world number 43 was beaten by Poland's Magda Linette, who took 84 minutes to secure a 6-2 7-5 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko got off to a superb start before holding on to beat Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova and also advance with a 6-1 3-6 6-4 win.

Home hopes were dashed as Japan's Kurumi Nara was beaten 6-2 6-4 by Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei, while China's Saisai Zheng dispatched Irina Falconi of the US 6-4 6-2.
