Madison Keys was among those to progress to round two on a rain-affected first day of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

After wet conditions delayed the start of play, the American seventh seed beat Timea Babos of Hungary 7-6 (7/3) 6-4.

There were also round-one victories for Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko and Great Britain's Heather Watson, who defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 7-6 (7/2) 6-1 and Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-4 7-5 respectively.

It had been scheduled for sixth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro to play Ukraine's Elina Svitolina and Daria Gavrilova of Australia to face Briton Naomi Broady.

But with the rain seeing play suspended for the day around 7pm, both those matches are now due to be contested on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, on day one of the inaugural Mallorca Open, Caroline Garcia - the only seed in action - advanced to the second round with victory over Carina Witthoeft.

France's Garcia, seeded sixth, was 5-2 down in the first set before getting past her German opponent 7-5 6-4.

There was also a fightback from Colombia's Mariana Duque-Marino as she triumphed 3-6 6-3 6-4 against Alison van Uytvanck of Belgium.

Other first-round winners were Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, a 6-0 6-2 victor over Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele, and Slovakian wild card Daniela Hantuchova, who beat Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-1 6-3.
