Kiki Bertens prevents all-Swiss final

Hopes of an all-Swiss final at the Ladies Championship Gstaad ended on Saturday as Kiki Bertens upset top seed Timea Bacsinszky.

Two Swiss players have never met in the final of a WTA event and Bertens ensured it stayed that way with a 7-5 7-6 (7/1) win, after making short work of Irina Khromacheva in her quarter-final match carried over from the previous day.

Bertens came from a break down to take both sets and the number three seed will face Viktorija Golubic in the final after she ended the run of 16-year-old Rebeka Masarova.

Masarova, the world number 797, had already upset the odds this week with victories over former number one Jelena Jankovic, Anett Kontaveit and Annika Beck but it proved a step too far against Golubic who was a 6-3 6-2 winner.

In Romania, Simona Halep reached her first final since early May with a hard-fought 6-7 (3/7) 6-4 6-3 victory over American Vania King at the BRD Bucharest Open.

Halop won the inaugural staging of the tournament two years ago and she remained on course for a second title on home soil with a strong performance from the baseline.

She will face Anastasija Sevastova in the final after she continued her recent resurgence with a straight-sets success over Laura Sigemund, 6-3 6-2.
