Johanna Konta reached her first WTA Tour semi-final on home soil at the Aegon International in Eastbourne but was unable to go one step further.
The British number one held the unusual distinction of having made her first grand slam semi-final, at the Australian Open in January, before reaching the last four on the main tour.
She ticked that box with a 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 victory over Russian former champion Ekaterina Makarova in match postponed from Thursday because of rain.
Konta returned to the court a couple of hours later for her semi-final against 10th seed Karolina Pliskova and took the opening set.
But, as in her previous two meetings on grass against Pliskova, the Czech hit back to win 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 6-3.
Konta was in tears early in the second set after a heavy tumble but did not call the trainer and will hope there are no repercussions only three days before the start of Wimbledon.
In the first round at SW19, 16th seed Konta will play Puerto Rican Monica Puig, who also bowed out in the semi-finals on the south coast.
Puig lost 6-2 6-1 to 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova, who earlier had turned around her quarter-final against top seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
The Pole had been in control at a set and a break up when rain stopped play on Thursday but Cibulkova hit back on the resumption to win 4-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-3.
