Johanna Konta breezes past Bethanie Mattek-Sands in first round of US Open

Johanna Konta may have played in a bumper new stadium but her US Open began with the minimum of fuss as she sailed past Bethanie Mattek-Sands and into round two.

Konta was the second women's match in the tournament's freshly built Grandstand arena, although there were few fans to watch as the British number one overcame Mattek-Sands 6-3 6-3.

She will now face Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova, a Wimbledon semi-finalist six years ago, for a place in the third round.
