Jana Cepelova came from a set down to end home hopes at the quarter-final stage of the Japan Women's Open on Friday.

The Slovakian lost three straight games to drop the first set to local favourite Kurumi Nara but fought back to seal a 3-6 6-4 6-1 win.

Cepelova will next face American Christina McHale in the semi-finals after the American came through an equally difficult battle against Viktorija Golubic.

The Swiss player battled back after losing the first set but McHale's experience saw her keep her nerve for a 6-3 5-7 6-3 success.

Sixth seed Zhang Shuai of China beat Varvara Lepchenko 6-7 (4/7) 6-1 6-3 and will play Katerina Siniakova, a 6-2 6-4 winner over Alison Riske.
