I hope Serena takes my record - Steffi Graf

Steffi Graf has admitted she hopes Serena Williams overhauls her open era record of 22 Grand Slam titles at the US Open.

Williams can move beyond the German's haul at Flushing Meadows, with Graf backing the American to keep racking up the major titles.

Williams needs 25 major triumphs to stand alone as the most decorated women's singles player of all time, with Margaret Court having won 24.

And Graf believes the 34-year-old remains well-placed to break all records in the women's game.

"I'm happy for her, I'm excited for her," Graf told CNN's Open Court.

"I think it's cool that records are being broken, that's what they're there for.

"She's been phenomenal to the sport of tennis, it's been great to watch. I hope she does break it."

Graf racked up her 22 majors between 1987 and 1999, while Williams started her dominance in 2002.

Enjoying family life with husband Andre Agassi in Las Vegas, Graf hailed Williams for an "unbelievable" career.

"I think she's been unbelievable, she's been amazing to watch," said Graf.

"She's been around for over 20 years.

"To have that career and play at the level she's been playing at is pretty unbelievable. I have so much respect."

While Graf fully expects Williams to extend her dominance, she believes Angelique Kerber can give the American a serious run for her money.

Kerber edged out Williams to claim the Australian Open title, leaving Graf hailing her compatriot's potency.

"I've gotten to know her a little bit over the years," said Graf of Kerber. "She's come to the Adidas programme in Las Vegas where we have a little tennis camp.

"She's physically really strong. She's a really hard worker.

"Sometimes I felt like she wasn't quite believing enough in herself. You could see how it sometimes changed during a match.

"She's gotten stronger mentally and I think that made a big difference.

"Hey, she's been in the finals, she won the Australian Open. She can do it all."

:: Open Court airs on CNN International on Saturday, August 20 at 2230 and Sunday, August 21 at 1730.
