Former US Open girls champion Daria Gavrilova reached the second round at the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy with a straight-sets win over Russia's Anna Kalinskaya.

The Australian, who reached the last 16 at Melbourne Park last week, prevailed 6-4 7-5 over the wildcard entrant after recovering from 5-3 down in the second set.

The 22-year-old will now play Svetlana Kuznetsova, who received a first-round bye.

Seventh seed Annika Beck of Germany saw off Holland's Kiki Bertens 7-5 3-6 6-4 while countrywoman Andrea Petkovic won a qualifier to reach the main draw, beating Anastasiya Komardina 6-2 6-3.

Elsewhere on the WTA Tour, sixth seed Misaki Doi survived a rollercoaster encounter against fellow Japanese player Nao Hibino at the Taiwan Open.

Doi, ranked 41, 61 places above her opponent, eased through the first set but a Hibino fightback made her dig deep for a 6-2 2-6 6-4 victory.

Fourth seed Anastasija Sevastova overcame qualifier Miyu Kato 6-0 6-4 while fifth-seeded Katerina Siniakova fought back to beat Galina Voskoboeva 5-7 6-4 6-2.

American Shelby Rogers, the seventh seed, beat Taiwanese wildcard Ya-Hsuan Lee 6-3 6-4.
