Garbine Muguruza gains revenge to reach Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo

Spain's Garbine Muguruza avenged her surprise early exit from the US Open by defeating Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of Tokyo's Pan Pacific Open.

The French Open champion unexpectedly lost to Sevastova earlier this month in New York but required less than one hour and 14 minutes to secure victory on Thursday.

There was, however, an upset when Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated US Open finallist Karolina Pliskova, the world number six, 6-4 6-2 to secure a quarter-final with Japanese teenager Naomi Osaka.

Poland's Magda Linette also won, defeating Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 4-6 6-3 7-5, and will next face Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki. There was also a a 7-6 6-4 win for Ukraine's Elina Svitolina over Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

In the Guangzhou Open, Russia's Jelena Jankovic won 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 against Germany's Sabine Lisicki to progress to the semi-finals.

Croatia's Ana Konjuh defeated America's Jennifer Brady 6-4 7-5, Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland won 4-6 6-4 3-6 against Estonia's Anett Kontaveit, and Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko defeated America's Alison Riske 3-6 6-4 6-0. All progress to the semi-finals.

In Seoul's Korea Open, Jana Celepova of Slovakia won 6-3 6-4 3-6 in the second round against Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu.

There were also second-round wins for Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo over France's Kristina Mladenovic, via a 1-6 6-2 6-4 scoreline, Romania's Patricia Maria ?ig with a 6-4 6-4 win over Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens, and Romania's Monica Niculescu, who defeated Slovakia's Anna Karolína Schmiedlova 6-2 6-2.
