Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska reach second round at Roland Garros

Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska progressed to the second round of the French Open in contrasting fashion.

Fourth seed Muguruza looked in trouble when she lost the first set to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who had lost her last 11 tour matches.

But the Spaniard recovered to win 3-6 6-3 6-3 and will now play France's Myrtille Georges.

Muguruza announced herself as a major talent at Roland Garros two years ago by stunning Serena Williams and then reaching the Wimbledon final last year.

But, like the rest of the leading women, the 22-year-old has been hugely inconsistent this season and she was relieved to come through.

"I'm just happy that I went through the first round," said Muguruza. "Sometimes you don't play your best tennis, but you find a way to win, which is very important."

The Spaniard had been due to play on Sunday but her match was one of many cancelled because of the weather.

More rain meant a late start on Monday as well - and it came as something of a shock to Muguruza when she discovered her match had been called.

She said: "I think I had the music on or something. I didn't really listen. The supervisor came, and they're like, 'We're waiting for you'.

"I'm like, 'No way'. I started to do running and jumping fast. So I didn't have the time to really warm up. But sometimes it happens like that."

Second seed Radwanska is not a clay lover but she was detained for only 63 minutes in a 6-0 6-2 win over Bojana Jovanovski.

Former finalist Simona Halep, seeded sixth this year, was even speedier, needing only 43 minutes to dismiss Nao Hibino by the same scoreline.

Seventh seed Roberta Vinci was the biggest casualty so far, going down 6-1 6-3 to Kateryna Bondarenko, while former finalist Sara Errani, 17th seed Karolina Pliskova and Germany's Sabine Lisicki also suffered losses.

Cagla Buyukakcay, meanwhile, became the first Turkish woman in the Open era to win a main-draw match at a grand slam with a 5-7 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
