Errani battles past Zanevska

Top seed Sara Errani claimed a hard-fought victory over Maryna Zanevska to reach the quarter-finals at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies.

The 28-year-old Italian, who made easy progress with a straight-sets defeat over Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round, saw off the Ukrainian qualifier with a 6-2 4-6 7-5 win in just under two hours.

The 2012 French Open finalist - looking for her ninth WTA tour title here in Austria - faces another qualifier in Darya Kasatkina in the last eight.

Teenage Russian Kasatkina recorded a shock 3-6 6-4 6-3 comeback victory over sixth-seeded German Julia Goerges to progress.

Earlier on, seventh seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia advanced just 29 minutes into her second-round tie with Andreea Mitu after the Romanian retired injured after losing the first set 6-1.
