Encouraging Shenzhen victory for Eugenie Bouchard

Eugenie Bouchard was encouraged by her progress after defeating Nicole Gibbs to reach the quarter-finals of the Shenzhen Open.

Bouchard was a 6-4 6-2 winner and is through to the last eight of a tournament for the first time since the Australian Open last year.

After her brilliant 2014 season, 2015 was a disaster for Bouchard, who won only 12 matches all year and did not complete a match after suffering concussion in a fall at the US Open.

Her ranking has dropped to 49 from a high of five at the end of 2014, but she began the comeback trail with a battling win against Donna Vekic in the first round in Shenzhen and was happy with her performance against Gibbs.

She said on the WTA website: "It was a solid match from me. I think I was able to improve off of my first round. But first and foremost I was able to play another whole match healthy, with no pain and no symptoms.

"Every match that I play gives me a little bit more confidence. I know it's a long road back to recovery and to being back to where I was and even better, so I'm ready for that long journey."

In the quarter-finals, Bouchard will play Hungary's Timea Babos, who upset fourth seed Monica Niculescu 6-1 6-4.

Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska was a 6-1 7-5 winner against China's Zhang Shuai but two other seeds fell, with Irina-Camelia Begu losing to Anna-Lena Friedsam and Zarina Diyas beaten by Katerina Siniakova.
