Elena Dementieva's defence of her Rogers Cup title was ended in the third round by China's Zheng Jie.
Zheng claimed the first ever meeting between the duo 7-6 (7/3) 6-4 in two hours and 10 minutes and will now meet 11th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarter-finals.
Kuznetsova, who claimed her first title of the year in San Diego earlier this month, produced a minor upset when she beat seventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 1-6 6-3.
Second seed Caroline Wozniacki, the highest-ranked player left in the draw after Jelena Jankovic's early exit, lost the opening set against Italy's Flavia Pennetta before progressing 4-6 6-3 6-1.
The Dane will meet French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the quarters after she defeated former world number one Dinara Safina 6-4 6-3.
There were easy wins for fifth seed Kim Clijsters, Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva and Marion Bartoli.
Clijsters easily beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-2 6-1 and will meet Zvonareva in the last eight after she ended Agnes Szavay's 12-match winning run 6-3 6-3.
Bartoli was hardly troubled by Iveta Benesova, who had knocked out Jankovic, to win 6-0 6-1.
Victoria Azarenka awaits the Frenchwoman in the next round after she dismissed Li Na 6-3 6-3.
