Confident Serena Williams eases to victory in French Open

Serena Williams made a supremely confident start to the defence of her French Open title with a 6-2 6-0 win over unseeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia.

The American made light of the world number 76, taking just 42 minutes to get past her injured opponent and secure a second-round meeting with Teliana Pereira or Krystyna Pliskova.

Williams continued where she left off in Rome, where she won the Italian Open a week ago without dropping a set.

She broke Rybarikova in the second game and, although the reigning champion promptly dropped her own serve, it was nothing more than a blip as she broke twice more to wrap up the first set in 23 minutes.

It was even more one-sided in the second set as Rybarikova, who wore heavy strapping to protect her left wrist and found movement difficult on her right ankle, struggled to cope with the powerful hitting of her opponent.

Two successive aces from the Slovak in the fourth game could not stop the rot as Williams reeled off 10 games in a row to complete the rout, restricting Rybarikova to just 22 points in the match.

The rapid victory completed a good day for the champion following the withdrawal of former world number one Victoria Azarenka, who was in the same half of the draw, and the surprise defeat suffered by third seed Angelique Kerber.
