Bighitting Kvitova wins in Wuhan

Petra Kvitova bludgeoned her way to a first WTA Tour title of 2016 as she won the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in China.

The Czech, the Olympic bronze medal winner in Rio, produced the sort of hitting that has seen her win Wimbledon twice as she blew Dominika Cibulkova off the court in a 6-1 6-1 romp.

Over the course of this week in Wuhan she has overpowered world number one Angelique Kerber, Johanna Konta and Simona Halep - all great defenders - and she was again imperious from the start against the Slovakian 10th seed.

The first game in her epic battle with Kerber in the third round lasted a whopping 13 minutes, but by that point in the final she was already 4-0 up and well on the way to the first set as Cibulkova had no answer to her huge forehand.

It was not until halfway through the second set that Cibulkova, playing her fourth match in three days, was able to hold her serve, but by then Kvitova had already broken again and there was no way back.

Kvitova rattled off the next three games, including two more breaks, to be crowned the queen of Wuhan, following her 2014 success here in the tournament's inaugural year.

She said: "It's great to win in Wuhan for the second time. I am really happy with how I played all week. I played really well for six (matches) in six days, which is unusual.

"I don't think I can be that consistent all year, I'm not that type of player."

Cibulkova, who is set for a career-high ranking well inside the top 10, added: "I have to look at the bigger picture. Petra played really well today and didn't give me a chance."

Meanwhile Krystina Pliskova claimed her maiden WTA Tour title by winning the Tashkent Open.

The twin sister of US Open finalist Karolina defeated defending champion Nao Hibino 6-3 2-6 6-3.
