Barbora Strycova faces Venus Williams after winning rain-affected Rogers Cup tie

Barbora Strycova will play Venus Williams in the second round of the Rogers Cup after seeing off Caroline Garcia in a rain-affected encounter in Montreal.

France's Garcia took the first set 6-2 but her Czech opponent bounced back strongly, winning the next two 6-3 to set up a meeting against Williams - whose best performance in this tournament saw her finish runner-up two years ago.

The contest ended more than six hours after the pair first walked on court, with five rain delays doing little for the momentum of either player.

Elsewhere, 13th seed Samantha Stosur, of Australia, knocked out Britain's Heather Watson 7-5 6-3, while 17th seed Elina Svitolina, of Ukraine, defeated America's Jennifer Brady 6-2 6-4.

Australia's Daria Gavrilova beat Germany's Annika Beck 6-4 6-3 to set up a second round clash with Simona Halep, while Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni ousted Nao Hibino of Japan 6-2 6-0 to book a meeting with Angelique Kerber.

America's Madison Brengle knocked out Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 1-6 6-4, second seed Petra Kvitova, of the Czech Republic, beat Poland's Magda Linette 6-1 6-2, while Italy's Camila Giorgi saw off America's Sloane Stephens 7-6 7-6.

Naomi Broady booked her place in the second round with a 3-6 6-4 6-2 victory over Puerto Rico's Monica Puig but t he match between Francoise Abanda and Saisai Zheng was postponed due to the rain delays - the pair will try again on Tuesday.
