Angelique Kerber through in Hong Kong but Venus Williams crashes out

Top seed Angelique Kerber completed a 6-2 3-6 6-2 victory over Louisa Chirico in their delayed second-round match at the Hong Kong Open, where number two seed Venus Williams was beaten by Alize Cornet.

Following the poor weather on Wednesday, the players returned to court with world number one Kerber ahead 2-1 on serve in the decider.

The German broke her American opponent three times on the way to securing a place in the quarter-finals following a contest which lasted a total of just over two hours action across two days.

Thursday's late match saw Williams finally get to start her showdown with France's Cornet.

The world number 49 took the opening set, during which both players had struggled to hold serve.

Although Williams recovered to level, it was Cornet who came through 6-2 3-6 6-2 after establishing a 4-0 lead in the decider.

Cornet will next play seventh-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic, the tournament winner in 2015.

Australian Daria Gavrilova, the eighth seed, was another to have her match held over, but soon closed out a 6-2 7-5 victory against Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic to line up a quarter-final with Kerber.

In Thursday's other second-round matches, number three seed Johanna Konta of Great Britain was forced to withdraw because an abdominal injury.

That meant Qiang Wang of China was handed a walkover, while Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States knocked out sixth-seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 4-6 6-2 6-2.

Wang will meet Caroline Wozniacki after the fifth seed from Denmark beat Britain's Heather Watson 6-3 6-3.

The other quarter-final sees Mattek-Sands take on Kristina Mladenovic after the Frenchwoman defeated Nao Hibino of Japan 7-6 (7/5) 6-2.

At the Tianjin Open in China, top seed and defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland withdrew with a thigh injury following her 6-1 6-1 second-round win over Russia's Evgeniya Rodina.

As a result, home player wildcard Shuai Peng, who defeated Chang Kai-chen of Chinese Taipei 6-3 6-2, was given a walkover into the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, f ifth seed Monica Puig of Puerto Rico also progressed into the last eight, beating Spain's Lara Arruabarrena 6-4 6-2 and Alison Riske of the United States won 6-3 7-6 (7/2) against Poland's Magda Linette.
