Angelique Kerber motors into last eight in Dubai

Top seed Angelique Kerber eased into the quarter-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a straight-sets victory over Monica Puig.

Kerber, who can return to world number one if she wins the tournament, needed a little over an hour to dispatch of the Puerto Rican as she sailed through 6-2 6-3.

She will meet Ana Konjuh in the last eight after the Croatian caused an upset by beating eighth seed Elena Vesnina 3-6 6-4 7-6(7/4).

There was another surprise as fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska was also sent packing, losing 6-4 2-6 6-2 to American Catherine Bellis.

Bellis, only 17, will now face Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the semi-final after the 10th seed saw off Kateryna Bondarenko.

There were also victories for seventh seed Elina Svitolina and Lauren Davis - who will now meet in the quarter-finals - while Anastasija Sevastova and Qiang Wang round off the final eight having also advanced on Wednesday.

The biggest upset of the day came at the Hungarian Ladies Open where qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich beat sixth seed Pauline Parmentier to reach the third round.

There were also second-round victories for Lucie Safarova, Julia Goerges and Annika Beck while top-seed Timea Babos won her first-round meeting with wildcard Ipek Soylu.

Babos is joined in round two by Oceane Dodin, Irina Khromacheva, Yanina Wickmayer, Irina Falconi and Carina Witthoeft - who all came through their opening matches of the main draw.
