Angelique Kerber battles into third round in Stuttgart

Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber came from behind to beat fellow German Annika Beck and reach the third round at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

Kerber, who defeated Serena Williams to win her first grand slam title in Melbourne in January, had to dig deep as she battled back to beat Beck 4-6 6-3 6-1.

The world number three's victory came on a good day overall for German players as Andrea Petkovic and Julia Goerges both overcame French opposition, beating Kristina Mladenovic and Alize Cornet respectively to make round two.

Second seed Garbine Muguruza is also through after she cruised past Hungarian Timea Babos 6-2 6-2 and there were also wins for Roberta Vinci, Monica Niculescu and Karoliona Pliskova.
