Talking points from day three of Wimbledon

29 June 2016 07:53

Wimbledon succumbed to the weather again on Wednesday, with showers ruining what had been set to be a great day of tennis.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at three big talking points.

WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT WILLIS?

World number 772 Marcus Willis has been the story of the tournament so far and after an arduous qualifying campaign, had his moment in the spotlight as he played Roger Federer on Centre Court. The result went as expected, but it now remains to be seen where Willis goes from here.

He joked around on the court, celebrating points and generally enjoyed himself. The £50,000 he earned will set him up for some time, but it is now over to him if he wants to maximise his clear talent or let this be his final Wimbledon.

WILL WE GET A 'PEOPLE'S SUNDAY'?

Wimbledon has not opened its gates for a public free-for-all on the middle Sunday since 2004 and although organisers have not said anything on the prospect of one here, any more rain makes it a pressing issue.

Fourteen first-round clashes remain unresolved and a backlog is starting to form. Officials will be hoping for some dry days ahead.

KONTA CAN

Jo Konta is the new head of British women's tennis. With Laura Robson down on her luck and Heather Watson battling to stay alive in the draw, Konta made serene progress to round two with a routine win over Monica Puig.

Konta served well against Puig - she won 74 per cent of her first-serve points - and cracked 17 winners. She has a very compact game and in a women's draw seemingly lacking depth, she could have a real go this year.
