Wickmayer won her first ever WTA Tour singles title, in Estoril in 2009.
At the 2009 French Open, she defeated Urszula Radwanska of Poland in the first round (4-6, 6-3, 6-0) before she was defeated by Samantha Stosur of Australia in the second round, (3-6, 6-4, 4-6).
At the 2009 Ordina Open, Wickmayer reached the singles final, after beating Kristina Barrois of Germany 6–1, 6–1 in the quarter-finals, and Francesca Schiavone in the semi-final. She lost the doubles final, with Krajicek, after a close three-set match against an Italian pairing.
