Biography
Thomas is a former Australian Open finalist who reached a
career-high ranking of number four in the world. For nearly a decade he
was one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour, finishing the
year in the world’s top ten on four separate occasions thanks to his
metronomic and laser-like baseline hitting.
He began
playing tennis at the age of five at the local Farsta Tennis Klub in
Stockholm. After becoming the number one junior in Sweden, Thomas went
on to win both the junior Australian Open and Wimbledon titles before
turning professional in 1991.
As well as the 19 ATP
Tour titles he won during his 15 years as a professional tennis player,
Thomas also helped the Swedish team reach the final of the Davis Cup in
1996 and 1997. Undoubtedly the high point of Thomas' career came in
1999 when he reached the final of the Australian Open. He was beaten in
four sets by Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
Retired since 2006, Thomas now lives in Monte Carlo.
