In the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, Kohlschreiber defeated Nicolas Lapentti 6–2 3–6 6–3 before being defeated by Fernando Verdasco in the fourth round. Also in 2009, during the French Open, Kohlschreiber defeated World No. 4 Novak Djokovic in a 6–4, 6–4, 6–4 upset.
