It is unlikely that Petra Kvitova will ever reach another grand slam semi-final, to put alongside her run to the business-end of this summer's Wimbledon, but the Czech was good enough at the US Open on Wednesday night to defeat Elena Baltacha.
In so doing she prevented the Briton from going through to a third-round meeting with Kim Clijsters, the defending champion and the world No 3 from Belgium.

But it was not to be.
Since Kvitova lost to Serena Williams in the semi-finals on Wimbledon's Centre Court, she has not produced anything like her best tennis, and she was beaten in the first round of all five tournaments she played between leaving the All England Club and arriving through the gates of Flushing Meadows.
But, once she had gone a set up by taking the tiebreak, Kvitova controlled the match and went on to win 7-6, 6-3.
